Functional Barrier Consortium.

A dedicated project is being undertaken by the Functional Barrier Consortium, established by PETCORE EUROPE and PETSheet Europe (part of EuPC). EU Regulation 2022/1616, classifies the Functional Barrier as a Novel Technology and the Consortium is undertaking monitoring and verification in order to demonstrate the safety of the functional barrier for food contact, and have it approved as a Suitable Technology.

Benefiting stakeholders across the PET value chain

Some 60 PETCORE EUROPE members take part in shaping thermoforming packaging design and life cycle. They include:

  • Sheet and thermoforms manufacturers
  • Retailers and packers
  • Equipment and engineering suppliers
  • Recyclers
  • EPRS
  • Lidding film and Labels producers
  • Additives colour and other Masterbatch producers

PETCORE EUROPE members that are suppliers of PET sheets and thermoforms, recyclers, equipment suppliers, masterbatches, lidding films, EPRs and retailers are entitled to participate. They form the core of the Working Group and have voting rights.

All PETCORE EUROPE members are allowed to participate in order to help or learn from the Working Group, although they have no voting rights. All engagement respects competition law.

Non PETCORE EUROPE participants can be invited by the chair or secretariat who will ensure that the invitee does not go against the interests of the association, its members, or competition law.

Timeline and reporting

Our Working Group has a workplan with detailed targets, timeline and objectives developed by and available to participants. It reports regularly to the Technical Committee and Board.

Chairperson and Secretariat

In line with all our Working Groups, the Chairperson is voted by those participants with a voting right. Two co-chairs are preferable to ensure continuity, efficiency and diversity of views.

Renewal is every 3 years. PETCORE EUROPE provides the secretariat.

A list of all Working Group chairpersons is available on our extranet and web platforms.
